Bonaire Cruise Stop: How to Rent a Jeep Right at the Pier

CruiseBy Lynden & the Spare Keys family

Your ship docks in Kralendijk, you have about eight hours, and the whole island is waiting. The easiest way to see it? Your own car, waiting for you when you step off the ship.

Why rent a car on a cruise day?

Bonaire has almost no public transport, and taxis add up quickly if you want to see more than one place. Organized 4x4 excursions are fun, but you share the car with strangers and follow someone else's schedule. With your own Jeep, you decide where to stop, how long to snorkel and when to grab lunch.

The catch: book early

On busy cruise days, rental cars and golf carts near the pier are often booked weeks or even months ahead. Small rentals like ours have only a few cars, so the earlier you message us, the better your chances.

How it works with Spare Keys

  1. Send us your ship and date on WhatsApp. Lynden checks availability and confirms.
  2. Lynden meets you at the pier. He waits at [meeting point, e.g. the exit of the cruise terminal] with the keys, shows you the car and gives you a few tips for the day.
  3. Explore. The island is small: you never drive more than about 45 minutes in one direction.
  4. Drop the car back at the pier at least [1 hour] before all-aboard time. Lynden takes it from there.

Which car should you pick?

  • Jeep Wrangler: the fun choice. Take the soft top off and feel the trade winds. It's also the only car of ours allowed on rough dirt roads like the east coast and Washington Slagbaai.
  • Chevrolet Trailblazer (7 seats): perfect if you're traveling with family or friends. One car for the whole group often costs less than several taxis.
  • Toyota RAV4: easy and comfortable for a relaxed day on paved roads.

What can you do in one day?

A popular loop: head south to the salt pans and the flamingos, stop at Pink Beach, cross to Lac Bay on the east side for lunch and a swim, and drive back via Rincon, the island's oldest village. We wrote a full route in our article One day on Bonaire by car.

Washington Slagbaai National Park is beautiful, but it really needs a full day. On a cruise stop, we'd skip it and come back for it on a longer trip.

Practical tips

  • Bring your driver's license and [a credit card / cash for the deposit].
  • Pack water, sunscreen, a towel and snorkel gear if you have it.
  • Fill up at a gas station before returning the car, and leave some margin for traffic near town.
  • Keep an eye on the time: the ship won't wait, and Lynden can't hold it for you.

Make it a beach day: add a big cooler box with ice ($10) and snorkel sets ($2 each) to your cruise day booking.

Ready for your Bonaire day? Send Lynden a WhatsApp with your ship name and date, and he'll see you at the pier.
