One Day on Bonaire by Car: A Route That Gets You Back on Board in Time
One day, one car, one island. Bonaire is small enough to see the highlights in a single day, as long as you plan a little. This route is built for cruise passengers, but it works just as well for anyone with only a day to spare. It runs mostly on paved roads, so any of our cars will do.
The route at a glance
- Morning (around 8:30): pick up your car at the pier. Lynden hands you the keys, and you head south along the coast.
- The Salt Pier: a huge industrial pier that still loads ships with Bonaire's salt, and one of the most photographed spots on the island.
- The salt pans and flamingos: white salt mountains and pink lakes. Bonaire is one of the few places in the world where Caribbean flamingos breed. The sanctuary itself is closed to visitors, but you'll often spot flamingos from the road.
- The slave huts: small stone huts by the salt pans, a sobering reminder of the island's history.
- Pink Beach: a long stretch of beach for a quick swim or snorkel.
- Willemstoren Lighthouse: Bonaire's oldest lighthouse, built in 1837, on the southern tip.
- Lunch at Lac Bay (around 12:30): follow the coast to the east side. Grab lunch near the turquoise lagoon, where food trucks often sell fresh fish, and take a swim in the shallow water.
- Afternoon: Rincon. Drive inland to the island's oldest village. Try the cactus liqueur at the Cadushy Distillery.
- Seru Largu: on the way back, stop at this viewpoint over Kralendijk and Klein Bonaire.
- Back to the pier at least [1 hour] before all-aboard. Fill up the tank on the way.
Tips for a smooth day
- Keep a time buffer. Bonaire is relaxed, and so is the traffic. Plan to be back early rather than just in time.
- Bring water and sunscreen. It's hot, and shade is limited at most stops.
- Snorkel gear? Bring it if you have it. Many beaches have great snorkeling right from the shore.
- Nature Fee: if you plan to snorkel or swim at the reef, you need the STINAPA Nature Fee ($40 per person, children under 12 free).
- Skip Washington Slagbaai on a cruise day. The park needs a full day and a high car like our Jeep.
Make it a beach day: add a big cooler box with ice ($10) and snorkel sets ($2 each) to your cruise day booking.
Want a car waiting at the pier? Cars sell out on busy cruise days. Send Lynden a WhatsApp with your ship and date.
